STATEMENT FROM BOROUGH PRESIDENT GIBSON ON LEGISLATIVE PACKAGE TO PROTECT ABORTION AND REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN NEW YORK STATE

June 17, 2022 “I stand with Governor Kathy Hochul, who today signed a legislative package into law that strengthens abortion rights in New York State following the leak of a draft decision by the Supreme Court striking down Roe v. Wade last month. Like many other New Yorkers, I am horrified at the thought of the Supreme Court potentially overturning decades of work that has given women across the United States the right to make decisions about their bodies without government interference. Governor Hochul’s leadership at this critical time demonstrates her understanding of the climate in Washington D.C. as she pushes ahead to ensure millions of women across New York State can continue to see their reproductive rights protected regardless of the Supreme Court’s decision.” Read More

BOROUGH PRESIDENT GIBSON`S STATEMENT ON CDC REPORT CITING 1 IN 5 WOMEN REPORT MISTREATMENT WHILE RECEIVING MATERNITY CARE

“The recent findings from the CDC stated that 1 in 5 women reported mistreatment while receiving maternity care, with Black, Hispanic, and multiracial women reporting mistreatment at higher rates. This confirms exactly what we know to be true. All maternity care should be respectful, supportive, free of harmful interactions, and include shared decision-making. Yet, women of color in our nation continue to be disproportionately affected by years of systemic medical racism and neglect that contribute to high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity. As an administration, we are committed to supporting birthing people in our borough so they have access to high-quality, bias-free, and patient-centered healthcare before, during, and after childbirth. It is a fundamental right that we will continue to fight for alongside our birthing advocates and our partners on the city, state, and federal levels of government.”
