“Whether Bronxites and New Yorkers know it or not the census count has a huge effect on what happens in our everyday lives. If we are not counted, our quality of life and our access to necessary services will undoubtedly be diminished. We need to make sure that every corner of this borough is counted.” -Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

The Census is a decennial count of every person living in the United States. The count is mandated by the U.S. Constitution, and participation is required by the law.

Why we need a complete count: The 2020 Census results will be used to determine how and where government resources will be allocated for the next ten years.

  • Federal funding for hospitals, fire departments, schools and roads is determined by Census data.
  • Federal programs such as Head Start, Medicare, Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance receive funding based on Census data.

The results will also be used to decide the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives and how congressional and state legislative districts will be drawn.

The United States 2020 Census website can be found at 2020census.gov, and additional information is available on nyc.gov.
