Borough President Diaz Releases Education Summit Policy Paper: “A Call to Action: Unclogging, Strengthening, and Insulating the Bronx Educational Pipeline”
Policy Paper sheds light on strengthening the “Educational Pipeline” to Improve Graduation Rates and Education Performance among Bronx Students
Today, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. released a policy paper based on his office’s recent education summit. The paper, titled “A Call to Action: Unclogging, Strengthening, and Insulating the Bronx Educational Pipeline,” highlights key recommendations from the borough’s first education summit, “From Cradle to Career,” held on October 15, 2011, at Lehman College.
During the education summit, Borough President Diaz gathered some of the best minds on education from not only the Bronx but from across the nation to discuss crucial topics affecting Bronx schools such as special education, English language learners, and higher education.
The Bronx Education Policy Paper, “A Call to Action,” is the product of the education summit. It represents the cumulative work of many dedicated individuals from a diverse coalition of academics, community representatives, parents and students coming together to work toward an educational policy that will benefit the students in our borough and across the City.
“This paper will serve as the roadmap towards making substantive change that will lead to both better implementation of Department of Education policies and higher performing students in the Bronx and citywide. We will continue to partner with the educational institutions, community based organizations, service providers and parents to enact these recommendations, so that our public schools can see change for the better,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
The policy paper finds that providing greater access to educational opportunities for all of the different types of learners, including English Language Learners, Special Needs, and Gifted and Talented students, is essential to improve student performance in the Bronx’s diverse population.
The paper also encourages early childhood education opportunities, parent and community involvement in the education process, and exposing students to science, technology, engineering, and math programs to help them achieve STEM career opportunities, which can help address the high unemployment rates in the Borough.
“In the future, when we look at how much education has improved in the Bronx, we can look back on how the education policy paper findings played an important role in enhancing Bronx education for the 1.4 million Bronxites who strongly believe that children only get one chance at a quality education, which is the key to a better life and a road out of poverty,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
The education policy paper finds that insulating the “Educational Pipeline” creates more educational opportunities and requires the collaboration and open communication between the community, Department of Education, the leadership of the Bronx, and both district and charter schools, to help improve performance and graduation rates among Bronx students.
Borough President Diaz announced that the policy paper would be released this week at his “State of the Borough” address last week.
