(Bronx, New York) On June 30th on the Steps of Borough Hall, Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson and New York City Council Member Althea Stevens were joined by Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, Essen Healthcare Bronx Health Link and others to denounce the reversal of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court declaring that women are no longer protected under the Constitution to have an abortion. The rollback of the decades old decision made by the same court in 1973 will eliminate rights in nearly half of the states.
Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson said, “Like many of you, Friday’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court reversing Roe v. Wade came as a shock and sent the women’s movement back decades in this attempt to undercut hard won victories that we enjoy today that include the right to vote and most recently equal pay among others.”
Borough President Gibson continued, “I am pleased to say that the State of New York thanks to Governor Kathy Hochul, has already taken steps to see that the women in our Borough and State even those living in a different state are welcome – and not impacted by this current conservative-leaning Supreme Court and blocked from seeking reproductive care.”
Borough President Gibson also discussed a bill she co-sponsored with New York City Council Member Carlina Rivera called Intro 506 that would identify so called Crisis Pregnancy Centers across the city that falsely claim to be abortion clinics yet are counseling women against exercising their choice.
“Whether it’s on the federal, state or city level, the decision by the Justices beg us all to do our part to protect the rights of women not just here, but across this nation as all too many are under scrutiny.”
