Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. hosted an interfaith service honoring the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in conjunction with the Trinity Baptist Church on Monday, January 20, 2020.
The service was conducted by Reverend Dr. David L. Kelly of the Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Brooklyn.
Speakers at the event included U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark and Congressman Eliot Engel.
“We still have work to do to live up to the legacy and the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr., but I know that he would be proud of the diversity of our borough and the way we all come together to support one another as a community,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “Because of the work of Dr. King and everyone else in the civil rights movement, we are able to have a diverse body of elected officials who just last session passed a landmark set of bills protecting tenant rights, along with protection for immigrants, the working class and the poor. That is Dr. King’s legacy still affecting us and making our world better every day.”
In his service, Reverend Kelly encouraged the congregation to rise above the racial tensions underlying many of today’s current events and to use their power as a voting block to fight for the ideals that Martin Luther King Jr. held most dear.
“God is stirring the nest of our church,” said Reverend Dr. David L. Kelly. “He’s trying to stir us to awareness and service and He is telling us that we’re better than this. God wants us to rise up over injustice and wrong. Stop the violence, stop the hate. We need our country to return to the banner of loving your neighbor.”
