BP Diaz Honors hip hop icon Slick Rick, Video Music Box VJ and founder Ralph McDaniels, The Source Magazine’s Londell McMillan, & Fever Records Sal Abbatiello

On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Windows of Hip Hop co-hosted the annual Hip-Hop Element Awards at Beatstro in The Bronx.

The event honored those musical luminaries who have promoted the Bronx-born phenomena known as hip-hop and advanced the culture forward by instilling civic mindedness and giving back to the community.

This year’s honorees include hip-hop legends Slick Rick; Video Music Box VJ and founder Ralph McDaniels, The Source Magazine’s Londell McMillan, and Fever Records Sal Abbatiello. Bronx hip-hop legend Fat Joe also made an appearance at the event.

“No matter what others tell you, the global phenomenon that is hip hop culture was birthed and nurtured here, in The Bronx, on Sedgwick Avenue,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “Today we honor not only legends and taste-makers of hip hop culture who not only have excelled in their field, but are also entertainers and entrepreneurs who symbolize how far hip hop has come, from block parties in The Bronx to being used in advertising by Fortune 500 companies. The genre has grown to the point where it now influences mainstream pop culture. You see hip hop’s influence everywhere, in all aspects of society. That was born right here in The Bronx.”
