Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. hosted an interfaith service honoring the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in conjunction with the Trinity Baptist Church on Monday, January 21, 2019.
The service was conducted by Reverend Dr. David L. Kelly of the Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Brooklyn. Speakers at the event included New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark and Senate minority leader Charles Schumer.
“This event celebrates the life and legacy of a giant. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was taken from this earth too soon, but in his 39 years of life he had an extraordinary impact on our country. One of the most important lessons of Dr. King is that the principle of love is at the center of any non-violent stance. He would want us to treat each other with love even if this seems difficult to do in today’s often divisive times. I am forever grateful to Trinity Baptist Church for partnering with me to host this important event,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
“Dr. King was born to dream. He was a child of the black church and the Baptist ministry and he was the grandson of sharecroppers and the great grandson of slaves. His dream was about power and politics, it was about a new order, it was a dream about people becoming equal and receiving their fair share, and it was a dream about the black and the white coming together in a better America. We have to make sure that dream does not die, even if the dreamer was killed,” said Reverend Dr. David L. Kelly.
