On Thursday, November 15, 2018, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. hosted his annual Puerto Rican Heritage Celebration, honoring individuals who have contributed to the growth and promotion of their community and culture.
This year’s honorees included Dr. Iraida V. Carrion, Associate Professor for the School of Social Work in Tampa, Florida; Dr. David Gomez, President of Hostos Community College; Eileen Torres, Executive Director for Bronx Works and the late Lorraine Montenegro, Co-Founder of United Bronx Parents, Inc. & Founder of La Casita.
“Puerto Ricans helped build The Bronx and have made many great contributions throughout the five boroughs, said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “Over the last year and a half, Puerto Ricans have been picking up the pieces from the devastation left behind by Hurricane Maria, but we are resilient people. Tonight, we recognized individuals who embody not just that resiliency, but our culture and rich heritage. As we pay tribute to the Puerto Rican community, I want to thank all of our honorees for their outstanding achievements to the civic and cultural life of our borough and our city.”
