On Monday, October 22, 2018, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. joined The Bronx Tourism Council, at Mercy College to announce the 24th Annual “Tour de Bronx,” the largest free bicycling event in New York State which will take place on Sunday, October 28, 2018.
The Tour de Bronx – sponsored by Montefiore Medical Center, Mercy College, BronxCare Health System, St. Barnabas Hospital, ConEdison, The Nature’s Bounty Co., Liberty Coca Cola, ZipCar, Dominos, and Unlimited Biking – drew over 6,000 bicyclists last year from throughout New York City and from around the world.
During the event, Borough President Diaz encouraged potential riders to register to participate at www.tourdebronx.com.
“This is one of my favorite events of the year because we attract so many people not just from around the borough, not just from New York City and the State of New York, but from around the world,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “For many, this is a yearly pilgrimage to The Bronx, where they get to enjoy our historical sites, our beautiful waterfronts and vibrant neighborhoods, showcasing the best that we have to offer. And being that cycling is a great exercise, the Tour De Bronx also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, excellently complementing our ‘#Not62’ health initiative, as far as helping improve the overall health of Bronx residents.”
“This annual event just gets bigger and better and we are thrilled to welcome new partners, sponsors and contributors! I’ve heard from many participants that this is their favorite biking event of the year, and that fills me with immense satisfaction.” Olga Luz Tirado, executive director, The Bronx Tourism Council.
“I’ve cycled in Tour de Bronx for more than a decade and every year I see more colleagues, patients and friends coming together to celebrate this fantastic event,” saidDr. Peter Selwyn, professor and chair, Family and Social Medicine, Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “The ride supports an active lifestyle which is so important to good health. As a bonus it gives people a chance to see the amazing diversity of the Bronx and its communities, including its beautiful shoreline.”
The event offers both a 25- and 40-mile course, each of which winds through dozens of beautiful Bronx neighborhoods, historic districts, parks, waterfront, Greenway paths and more. Both routes culminate at the New York Botanical Garden for end-of-ride pizza, refreshments and a music festival.
The Tour De Bronx event has grown exponentially since its inception, with the 2014 edition of the Tour de Bronx having seen a record-breaking 7,500+ participants from all over the country gather on the Grand Concourse.
