“One of the basic tenets of our Constitution is a right to a speedy trial. For years many Bronx residents had to navigate the criminal justice system with no reasonable hope or expectation that low-level offenses could be resolved quickly rather than held hanging over their heads. This case has shined a light on the crucial issue of the necessity of swift justice, and while this settlement is certainly a step in the right direction, the judicial process must continue to improve in order to achieve fairer outcomes,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
