Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. today sent a letter to Patrick J. Lynch, president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, asking that he apologize for his union’s distribution of a petition urging police officers to preemptively disinvite both Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito to their funerals if they are killed in the line of duty.
“This rhetoric, demanding that Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito stay away from the funerals of fallen police officers—heroes killed in the line of duty—is both beyond the limits of reasonable discourse and, frankly, embarrassing,” writes Borough President Diaz in the letter.
Borough President Diaz added, “You, Mr. Lynch, owe the mayor, the speaker, your membership and the people of this city an apology for your divisive, irresponsible remarks and actions.
