Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz today announced that, in the spirit of borough pride, the two would wager a variety of delicacies from their respective boroughs over the results of the annual Subway Series between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees, which will take place between Monday, May 12 and Thursday, May 15.
Borough President Diaz will send Borough President Katz a sample tray of empanadas from Babalu on East Tremont Road and a dozen cannoli from the Egidio Pastry Shop, located in the Bronx’s Little Italy, Belmont, should the Mets win more games than the Yankees during the four-game Subway Series.
Should the Yankees win the Subway Series, Borough President Katz will send Borough President Diaz a platter of sandwiches from Leo’s Latticini, the amazing Italian deli better known as Mama’s of Corona. For dessert, Borough President Katz will send Borough President Diaz some delicious pastries from the Omonia Café in Astoria.
“In the spirit of friendly competition, I am willing to wager some of the best food offerings my borough has to offer, though I do not expect to pay. I cannot wait to sample these delicious Queens delicacies after the Yankees defeat the Mets in this week’s Subway Series,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “This is Bronx Week, a time when we celebrate the best our borough has to offer. Nothing is better than the New York Yankees, and I look forward to celebrating their victory this week.”
“I am sure the Mets will defeat the Yankees during this week’s Subway Series,” said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. “But if the Yankees should somehow prevail, Bronx Borough President Diaz will get to enjoy some delicious food from two of the finest eateries in Queens.”
In the spirit of good sportsmanship, both wagers will be paid out if the Mets and Yankees split the four game series 2-2.
“Queens offers an incredibly diverse array of cuisine and has some of the best restaurants in the city, so Borough President Diaz is in for a real treat if the Yankees manage to win the series,” Borough President Katz said. “But I fully expect the Mets will win and that I will be enjoying some delicious food from the Bronx.
“We have great culinary options in The Bronx, so a Mets victory would certainly be a treat for Borough President Katz,” said Borough President Diaz. “But the Yankees are the greatest franchise in baseball history, and I’m sure their decades of dominance will continue through this week.”
