On Wednesday, September 19, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Neil Giacobbi of AT&T visited a practice of the Little League Raiders as they prepared to defend their title in the second annual “Borough President’s Cup” Little League Championship against the Bronx Bombers.
The tournament, co-sponsored by AT&T and the New York Yankees, provides 13 and 14 year olds from across the Bronx the rare opportunity to play a championship game at Yankee Stadium, which this year will be held on September 25.
To compete for the “Borough President’s Cup,” players for each Little League had to meet a set of requirements unrelated to their performance on the field. Those included a B-average in school, 90 percent or greater school attendance and a demonstrated commitment to community service.
Because of AT&T’s involvement in this year’s Bronx Borough President’s Cup, the tournament has expanded from 2 to 5 teams and the Company will be making a $1,000 equipment award to each participating team, with a $2,000 award to this year’s victor.
