Statement from Borough President Diaz
Re: Wisconsin Sikh Temple Shooting
“I am deeply saddened by Sunday’s shooting at a Milwaukee Sikh temple, a senseless act of violence and tragedy that should never befall a community.
“I, along with all 1.4 million residents in the Bronx, will keep the community of Oak Creek and the entire state of Wisconsin in our thoughts and prayers through this difficult time. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded.
“This tragedy comes just weeks after the shooting massacre in Aurora, Colorado. I strongly believe that it is time for a national dialogue on stricter gun control, to prevent guns and ammunition from falling into the wrong hands.
“Ending gun violence has been a top priority of mine since I became an elected official, and despite our good work, too many firearms end up in the hands of the wrong people both through legal and illegal means. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen innocent people and children shot in New York, Colorado and now Wisconsin.
“This is a national problem that begs us to revisit the Second Amendment and the true meaning of what it was intended to protect, so we can better prevent these crimes and protect innocent Americans of all races, religious and ethnic communities. We should begin by reinstating the federal ban on assault weapons, so that military-grade weapons cannot be easily purchased,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
