Statement from Borough President Diaz
Re: Woodlawn Cemetery’s Designation as a National Historic Landmark
“I congratulate The Woodlawn Cemetery on its designation as a National Historic Landmark. The Woodlawn Cemetery is the final resting place for many famous and historically significant Americans and it is vitally important to preserve our nation’s history for ourselves and for the generations to come. Without our history we do not know where we came from and we do not know where we are headed,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
“By being recognized as a National Historic Landmark, The Woodlawn Cemetery may now be eligible to be considered for federal grants for historic preservation, which will preserve this landmark now and for the future. In October 2010 I submitted a letter to Mr. Ken Salazar, the Secretary of the U.S Department of the Interior, in support of the designation of The Woodlawn Cemetery. I thank Mr. Salazar, the Friends of Woodlawn
