New Poll Shows that New Yorkers are in
Overwhelming Agreement on “Living Wage”
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. today hailed a new poll by Baruch College Survey Research that shows New Yorkers are in overwhelming agreement that the City needs a new ‘living wage” law.
"New Yorkers from across the political spectrum can see what the Bloomberg administration cannot: when heavy taxpayer subsidies are used to make development projects work, developers must do better by those they employ. The ‘Fair Wages for New Yorkers’ Act is what will make that happen,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
According to the Baruch College Survey Research, 78 percent of New Yorkers agree with requiring employers that get taxpayer-funded city subsidies to pay $10-an-hour plus benefits, while just 15 percent do not. This includes 83 percent of all Democrats, 74 percent of independents, and 56 percent of Republicans.
“The results of this poll make it clear that support for the ‘Fair Wages for New Yorkers’ Act is broad, and that the Bloomberg administration is on the wrong side of this issue. Like myself and the 31 City Council members that support the bill, City residents don’t believe that a ‘living wage’ will harm our economy. I need to say it again, and I know New Yorkers agree with me, if developers do not want to pay a ‘living wage’ when they take heavy taxpayer subsidies, then the answer is simple: do not ask for a taxpayer-funded handout,” said Borough President Diaz.
The “Fair Wages for New Yorkers” Act, which was introduced into the City Council at the behest of Borough President Diaz, would require developers that receive heavy taxpayer subsidies to pay their employees a “living wage.” The bill, which was introduced by Council Members Annabel Palma and G. Oliver Koppell on behalf of the borough president, currently has 31 City Council co-sponsors.
