RE: Announced Public School Closures by the Department of Education
"Eight years of closing and re-opening schools has not led to the level of progress that is needed to truly turn our public education system around. This year’s State Math and ELA scores underscored this point. It frustrates me that school closure continues to be the preferred option of reform used by the Department of Education. Time and time again what I have heard from parents, students and teachers is that they are in need of additional resources and support. In addition, many of the Bronx schools proposed for phase-out exist in a building with other schools that are doing well, and I am baffled as to why the DOE does not encourage these schools to work with one another. I will continue to hold the DOE accountable to support our schools and not give up on our children,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
