  • Borough President Diaz Joins with Good Jobs New York to Shine Light on Publicly Subsidized Firms in The Bronx

Maps for all Bronx community boards reveal company-specific job promises when tax breaks are allocated to a variety of businesses

Today, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., together with Good Jobs New York, announced the release of “Bronx Subsidy Snapshots” for all 12 Bronx Community Boards.

These “Bronx Subsidy Snapshots” are maps highlighting all of the projects funded by the city’s Industrial Development Agency (IDA) in each of the Community Board Districts for Fiscal Year 2009. Each year the IDA subsidizes development projects throughout the Bronx, with the goal of creating and retaining jobs in the city. Some of these subsidy packages can be worth millions of dollars for businesses in the Bronx.

The aim of these snapshots is to encourage Bronx Community Boards to use this public information to facilitate relationships with subsidized businesses in their neighborhoods to create job opportunities and internship placements for Bronx residents.  These newly created maps will also include information on high-road Bronx businesses that are growing and hiring New Yorkers.

“As I have stated publicly, I strongly believe that if you want charity, you must be charitable. If you want a public benefit, your project must benefit the public.  To that end, Good Jobs New York and I have joined together to create ‘Bronx Subsidy Snapshots’ to empower Bronx Community Boards and the community-at-large to get the most out of the city’s public investment in businesses working in Bronx neighborhoods,” said Borough President Diaz.

“We applaud Borough President Diaz’s leadership on the Board of Directors of New York City Industrial Development Agency in calling for transparent and accountable investment of public subsidies to improve the lives of working people in the Bronx,” said Project Director for Good Jobs New York, Bettina Damiani.  “We are thrilled to partner with the Borough President and his staff to share information in a neighborhood-friendly format with Bronx Community Boards and others in the Bronx about companies in their areas that have received public financing and made a commitment to job creation.”

Good Jobs New York (GJNY) is a citywide project promoting transparency and public participation concerning tax breaks and other subsidies provided to corporations for economic development by New York City government. GJNY assists community leaders who want to learn about development projects in their neighborhoods. They were founded in 1999 as a project of Good Jobs First (which is based in Washington DC), in partnership with the Fiscal Policy Institute (which has offices in Albany and New York).
