Statement from Borough President Diaz
RE: Tree Removal on Pelham Parkway
“The reconstruction of Pelham Parkway is essential for improving the safety of both pedestrians and the traveling public. This objective must be first and foremost. I am therefore pleased that the scope of work included in the Pelham Parkway plan and endorsed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) includes new drainage systems to eliminate flooding, new streetlights to improve night visibility and the installation of a guardrail to discourage both mid-block crossings and prevent crashes.
“However, I am also mindful of the 43 mature trees that current plans require for removal in order to satisfy the safety mandates of this project, the 30 trees identified by the DPR as being in jeopardy due to their health, plus the 7 trees necessary to accommodate the installation of a slip ramp. Given the significant number of trees to be taken, I am calling on DOT and DPR to diligently review their plans and provide me a detailed accounting as to whether any trees now identified for removal can be spared. I am especially pleased to understand that, in fact, no healthy trees pursuant to this project will be taken until September 2012. This allows all parties involved to make a good faith effort to save the old growth, historic trees of Pelham Parkway,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
