More than 1,000 refurbished laptops and PCs available in back-to-school special
October 22, 2009–Offering a “Smart Start to the School Year” for Bronx residents, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Per Scholas President & CEO Plinio Ayala have together announced a special back-to-school deal on over 1,000 refurbished laptop computers which are now available for only $275 a piece.
The affordable computer systems, available on a first-come, first-serve basis, were donated by organizations such as Con Edison and the Internal Revenue Service, and reconditioned by Per Scholas, a Bronx-based nonprofit that seeks to bridge the digital divide through computer-recycling and job-training programs. The laptops feature Pentium IV processors, full Internet capability, and free Channel 13/WNET educational software. They also come with a free 60-day limited warranty and free lifetime access to a bilingual, toll-free help desk.
“Access to technology is a critical component to the academic success of our students. I thank Per Scholas and all the organizations that have donated laptops for this initiative. Your combined efforts have made it possible for these computers to be available to many Bronx families who would otherwise be unable to afford them.” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.“In this fast-paced global economy technical skills are a requirement for any employment opportunity,” added Ayala. “At Per Scholas we recognize that connecting students to technology is crucial in promoting success within the educational arena and beyond. It is our mission to provide the community with an affordable computer solution to meet the needs of students.”
Any family interested in ordering a discounted laptop should call Per Scholas at (718) 991-8400 or visit the group’s factory outlet at 1575 Bronx River Avenue. Representatives are available between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
