Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., today released his recommendations on the future of public school governance, outlining five specific plans to improve mayoral control of New York City public schools.
Borough President Diaz has offered recommendations to change the makeup of the Panel for Educational Policy, to bring more fiscal accountability to the Department of Education, to expand the role of local Community School Districts, and to continue to require a sunset provision to the law.
Borough President Diaz is also calling on the Department of Education to create the new position of Deputy Chancellor for Special Education as part of the reauthorization of mayoral control.
“While I do support the concept of mayoral control and want to see it reauthorized by the State Legislature, there is a need for greater fiscal oversight and more meaningful parent and community involvement in our public schools. I hope that the State Legislature will give my recommendations a look and see fit to adopt them as part of the law’s reauthorization,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.
