On Friday May 3, 2019, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. co-hosted the “Learning how to Prevent Legionnaires: A Public Health Education” symposium, in conjunction with the Allergy & Asthma Network, The Bronx Health Link and the Alliance to Prevent Legionnaires Disease. The event took place at The Bronx County Building, Veterans’ Memorial Hall, with the goal of informing the general public on how to prevent an outbreak of Legionnaires Disease.
Experts in the health and medical field came together to inform the general public about how to limit interaction with the Legionella bacteria, understand where it comes from, who is particularly at risk, as well as what to do if you experience certain symptoms of the disease.
“We are going to continue to work to do our very best to prevent outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease in The Bronx and New York City and keep our water supply safe,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
“The first and best line of defense to prevent Legionnaires’ disease is education so individuals know if they may be more susceptible to contracting the disease and the signs and symptoms to seek immediate medical treatment,” said Tonya Winders, President and CEO of the Allergy & Asthma Network and a Board Member of the Alliance to Prevent Legionnaires’ Disease. “We applaud the Bronx Borough President for his leadership in holding this community event to provide Bronx residents with a better understanding of the waterborne bacteria which causes Legionnaires’ disease and how to protect themselves and their families.”
