Today, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. issued a letter, co-signed by Congress Members Joseph Crowley and Eliot Engel, demanding that the Postal Regulatory Commission reconsider the closure of seven post offices in Bronx County.

In August, the Postal Regulatory Commission announced that seven Bronx post offices were slated to be eliminated due to financial trouble. Those branches are: Botanical, Clason Point, Crotona Park, Hillside, Melcourt, Oak Point, and Van Nest.

In addition, Deputy Bronx Borough President Aurelia Greene testified this afternoon at a hearing of the Postal Regulatory Commission, at Fordham University, against the closures. In her testimony, Deputy Borough President Greene noted that six of the post offices slated to be closed are more than half a mile away from the nearest postal branch, which would create a new hardship for a largely pedestrian Bronx.

The Borough President’s officed has created a map to illustrate the locations of the Bronx post offices slated for closure as well as the locations of other existing post offices. Click here to view the map.
