“The administration’s decision to open a migrant shelter in our borough without addressing the pressing questions and concerns of our community is unacceptable. This decision was imposed with minimal engagement and no meaningful conversations with those who will be directly affected.
Instead of relying on temporary solutions like this shelter, we need a comprehensive, long-term housing strategy that tackles the root causes of homelessness and supports sustainable solutions for our borough. The resources being funneled into this facility should be redirected toward developing housing that provides lasting support for our community.
Several critical issues remain unresolved:
- What steps are being taken to enhance the safety of the 40th Precinct and improve public safety in the South Bronx?
- How does this shelter plan address not just immediate needs, but also broader concerns such as safety, infrastructure, and the well-being of residents?
- With the change in administration in Washington, how are we ensuring that this shelter remains protected from immigration enforcement actions that could jeopardize public safety?
- What tangible benefits does this decision bring to the Bronx?
Without clear answers and a commitment to addressing these issues, it is difficult to justify this decision. The South Bronx deserves more than temporary measures—we need a long-term strategy that addresses the root causes of our problems. We continue to bear an unfair burden of the city’s challenges yet lack the support our residents, families, businesses, and local organizations need.
This is not the solution the Bronx deserves. The administration must listen to us, engage meaningfully, and work alongside us to create real, sustainable solutions.”
