Statement from Borough President Diaz re: Friday night’s shooting incidents across the Bronx
Last night, there were nine shooting incidents across the Bronx, resulting in 14 victims and two deaths. In response to this wave of violence, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. issued the following statement:
“Last night’s wave of violence is extremely alarming, not only to myself but to the overwhelming majority of my constituents: 1.4 million Bronx residents who want to do nothing more than work, raise their families and live their lives in peace without having to worry that they or their children will be cut down by a thug’s bullet. The summer is supposed to be a time to relax with family and friends without fear of losing one’s life. Those responsible for these shootings must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Those who would turn to a gun as the answer to their problems have no place in decent society. This has to stop,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
Borough President Diaz plans to meet with both Assistant Chief Carlos M. Gomez, Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Bronx, and Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson in the coming days to discuss new strategies to combat gun violence in the Bronx.
“We have seen dark times in the Bronx, but together as a community we have worked hard to rebuild our neighborhoods and make our borough a great place to live. These heinous acts are not only harmful to the victims, but continue to perpetuate negative stereotypes about who we are as a borough. We will remain undeterred in our efforts to empower the hardworking people of the Bronx, who have relentlessly and untiringly met the challenges of building a better life for themselves and their children, and we will not allow the actions of the worst among us to diminish our progress,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
