Maria Lopez, 67 years old, got her flu shot from Denise Chevere, a nurse from Union Settlement Homecare, during the free vaccination program organized by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. On Thursday, November 19, a group of 380 residents received a flu shot as part of a program of free vaccination organized by the Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Bronx District Public Health Office, Union Settlement, Lincoln Hospital Medical Center and Touro College of Pharmacy’s. "One of the most important public health measures in preparation for the winter season is influenza vaccination. I want to help Bronxites to take the necessary previsions to fight viruses like the dangerous H1N1 and the seasonal flu,” said Borough President Diaz.
More than three hundred business owners were part of The Bronx Economic Summit: a Blueprint for Success, a full-day event organized by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. to bring business leaders and industry experts together to discuss and create an economic plan for the future of the borough.
On Wednesday, November 18, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Comité Noviembre, joined but dozens of Bronxites, celebrated Puerto Rican Heritage Month honoring an important group of Puerto Rican leaders. This year honorees were Hector Ramos, journalist with more than 70 years of career in Puerto Rico and New York; and Dr. Antonia Pantoja, educator, social worker, feminist, civil rights leader and founder of ASPIRA, the Puerto Rican Forum, Boricua College and Producir, who was honored posthumously with a brief viewing of a documentary based on her life work.
On Tuesday, November 17, Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. testified to the City Council's subcommittee on Zoning & Franchises regarding the redevelopment of the Kingsbridge Armory. Read the Borough President's testimony here.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr was honored with the Latino Trendsetters Award for 2009 by DTM (Defining Trends Magazine). This award is given to leaders and innovators in the Hispanic community who maintain high levels of standards through their actions and deeds, those who are not afraid to stand out from the pack in order to make a difference and define trends that influence both the mainstream and the Latino/Hispanic culture from which they rose.
These reports geographically identify the distribution of the 148 supportive housing developments and 422 Special Needs facilities located throughout the borough by community district. Borough President Diaz has commissioned these reports to help communities plan for their development. Although these services play an important role in the life of their residents, communities as well have a responsibility to help plan for their placement according to the city’s fair share principals.
