Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion joined parents from the Collaborative to Improve Bronx Schools (CCB) to rally against the dismal conditions of Bronx middle schools.

CCB is a founding member of the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice (CEJ) which recently released a report titled “NYC Middle Grade Schools: Pathways to Success or Platforms for Failure.”   The report documents stark inequities in course offerings and in teacher distribution between high and low performing schools.

According to the report, in the Bronx, only one out of five eighth graders can read at the state’s standard level.  Today one hundred balloons were released – 75 black, representing the percentage of students who do NOT graduate with a regent’s diploma, and 25 red balloons, representing those who do graduate from high school with a regent’s diploma.

“The Education crisis within our Borough and City needs immediate attention. Unfortunately the American dream of every child having access to a great education is not being realized. We must create an educational environment that is conducive to learning and prepares our children to compete in the global market.” said Carrion.
