BIKING THE BRONX
RECORD CROWDS JOIN BRONX BP AT ANNUAL TOUR DE BRONX
Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión along with Transportation Alternatives, Aetna and the Bronx Tourism Council hosted the annual Tour de Bronx. Now in its 13th year, this special biking event considered the largest one in the Northeast attracted a record crowd of over 6,000 riders.
“Every year this event gets bigger and bigger. I am so proud to ride through the great streets of the Bronx with over 6,000 bike enthusiasts and show off this great borough,” stated Carrión. “People must understand the benefits of biking for both your health and for the environment. Biking is common sense.”
Carrión went on to say, “This is just one way we try to showcase what Bronxites have always known, - the Bronx is a vibrant borough filled with beautiful places to live, work and visit. The Bronx is on the move! I am thrilled to see people from all over the region to come up every week and explore this fantastic borough by bike or by foot.”
“With more bike lanes and greenways than ever, there has never been a better time to bike The Bronx," says Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. "T.A. is proud to join Borough President Carrión at this year's Tour de Bronx to showcase some of the best biking anywhere in NYC."
Cyclists chose either a 25-mile or 40-mile route. Both routes included attractions like St. Ann’s, the borough’s oldest church once owned by the Morris family, Yankee Stadium, the historic Longwood section celebrated for its stately Victorian-era townhouses and various other Bronx attractions.
"Aetna is pleased to launch our partnership with the Bronx Borough President's Office by sponsoring the Tour de Bronx. Since bicycling is healthy, the event fits perfectly into our strategy of promoting a healthier Bronx. Being born and raised in the Bronx myself, I am committed to ensuring that Aetna takes an active role in making the Bronx a better place to live and work. Bronx residents and businesses will benefit from this partnership,” stated Miguel Centeno, Vice President of Strategic Market Development
Following the ride, cyclists were invited to the Tour de Bronx Festival at Botanical Gardens featuring live entertainment and refreshments including free pizza provided by Dominos Pizza.
October is National Bike Helmet Safety month and in recognition of that the first 150 kids received a free bike helmet.
