CARRIÓN JOINS CAMPAIGN TO END HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT CRISIS
Bronx, NY – Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión along with Council Member Joel Rivera and Directions for Our Youth community group, announced their plans to join with radio stations WBLS, LaMega/Amor and POWER 105 to launch an unprecedented campaign to engage parents of high school students in order to prevent dropouts.
“We are facing a real crisis and we must act,” stated Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión. “We must reengage both the students and the parents.”
The three stations will carry public service announcements regarding parental involvement in High Schools and various radio personalities including Deja Vu of POWER 105 and Dr. Bob Lee of WBLS will visit various New York City Schools to promote this important campaign.
Over 20,000 students drop out of school each year and currently there are over 70,000 students in school but overage and under-credited. These 70,000 are a severe risk to drop out.
Approximately half (48%) of all entering freshmen become overage and under-credited during high school -- meaning that one in two freshmen that enter NYC high schools become overage and under-credited.
“We need a series of second chance programs that focus on dropouts as well as programs with preventative measures to reengage those in the system that are struggling,” stated Carrion. “These programs should provide resources and supports such as counseling, mentorship, arts programs, sports programs, parental engagement strategies and innovative academic interventions. There are many proven strategies and investments that do not need reinventing just our added commitment of time and resources to implement and support them.”
These public service announcement will start airing in early October and will be heard throughout New York City.
