CARRION ANNOUCES $5 MILLION FOR BRONX SCHOOLS
Bronx, NY—Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion announced today approximately $5 Million in funding to various Bronx Schools. The money will be used for everything from additional computers, science labs, upgrades to school libraries, renovation of school based health centers and rehabilitation of school playgrounds.
Carrion will provide approximately $1 million for school library upgrades, another $200,000 technology and computer upgrades and another $200,000 for the rehabilitation of school playgrounds.
“As I have said many times before, the best social program is a job and the key to getting a good job is first getting a good education,” stated Carrion. “Our kids can’t get a good education if they are sitting in crumbling buildings with outdated technology and no recreational resources”
In addition to the technological upgrades and infrastructure improvements Carrion is also giving over $300,000 to renovate health centers at local Bronx Schools that are part of the New York State School Based Health Center Program.
The New York State School-Based Health Centers Program, started in 1981 to treat children in low-income, high-risk communities, many of whom had no health insurance. The program sought to provide health services to children through teams of school nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, physician assistants, community health aides, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, health educators, nutritionists and dentists. There are now 61 such centers in New York City high schools and middle schools, according to the New York State Coalition for School Based Primary Care, and many other states have introduced similar services.
“Our children’s health is such an important part of the educational process”, stated Carrion. “It common sense that poor heath impairs a child’s ability to learn.”
