BRONX GOES GREEN AND SAVES ENERGY
Carrion Funds 3,500 Units of Sustainable Housing — Promotes Energy Efficiency
BRONX, NY- Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion has released a report highlighting green housing units that his administration has built and supported over the last 6 years. The Borough President has provided approximately $24 million for green initiatives in over 70% of the housing units that have been built with his capital assistance. These units contain everything from energy efficient windows, and energy star appliances, to green roofs and energy efficient boilers. Various buildings have achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification, the national standard for green building design.
“Being green and creating a sustainable and energy efficient environment must begin at the home,” stated Carrion.
Carrion pointed out that the Bronx economy is booming, but unlike years past, development is not happening at the expense of a sustainable environmental strategy.
“We can no longer ignore the responsibility of pursuing environmentally sustainable development. As the Bronx and the entire city continue to grow we must understand that economic viability and environmentally friendly are not mutually exclusive. We are committed to creating a set of conditions in which future generations will enjoy cities that are both economically strong and environmentally sound,” stated Carrion.
Addressing the city’s ongoing struggles with energy infrastructure and supply Carrion said “We have seen the problems that our energy grid and infrastructure has experienced, whether it be last year ' s Queens power outage or just the recent steam explosion, any strain we can remove from it by being more energy efficient makes sense. We must take a two-fold approach updating our infrastructure while at the same time conserving energy.”
Carrion recently hosted an environmental summit with the founder of Greenpeace Dr. Patrick Moore. At this meeting business leaders and environmental leaders discussed how they can work together to create businesses and economic opportunities that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. Moore praised the Bronx for its leadership role in green building.
“This Borough has really taken the lead in developing smart, environmentally sound policies and programs,” stated Moore. “I guess you can say if you can do it in the Bronx, you can do it anywhere.”
The Borough President has also launched other green initiatives and programs throughout the Borough including the EZ Environmental Fund, Bronx Green Roof Movement , The Harlem River Promenade Project, the Gateway/Yankee Stadium waterfront access project , the Bronx Waterfront Plan, Alternative Fuels for Bronx Fleets, Brownfields Remediation State program and his proposed tax incentives for green manufacturing and tax exemptions for developers who use green materials.
