GREEN WITH ENVY: CARRION AND FOUNDER OF GREEN PEACE HOST ENVIRONMENTAL DISCUSSION
BRONX, NY- Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion along with the Co-Founder of Greenpeace, Dr. Patrick Moore, hosted numerous citywide business leaders, environmental organizations and community leaders to discuss the indisputable connection between environmental and economic success. Dr. Moore an environmental leader for over 30 years came to the Bronx to praise the numerous green efforts the Bronx has undertaken in recent years.
The Borough President has launched various green initiatives and programs throughout the Borough. These include the EZ Environmental Fund, Bronx Green Roof Movement , The Harlem River Promenade Project, the Bronx Waterfront Plan, Alternative Fuels for Bronx Fleets, Brownfields Remediation and his proposed tax incentives for Green Manufacturing and tax exemptions for developers who use green materials.
“It really is outstanding what the Bronx has been able to do regarding green initiatives. This Borough has taken the lead in developing smart environmentally sound policies and programs,” stated Moore. “I guess you can say if you can do it in the Bronx, you can do it anywhere.”
Carrion pointed out that the Bronx economy is booming, but unlike years past, development is not happening at the expense of a sustainable environmental strategy.
“We can no longer ignore the responsibility of pursuing environmentally sustainable development. As the Bronx and the entire city continue to grow we must understand that economic viability and environmentally friendly are not mutual exclusive. We are committed to creating a set of conditions in which future generations will enjoy cities that are both economically strong and environmentally sound,” stated Carrion.
“The story of the Bronx is changing. Out of the tough times of the previous decades the Bronx has emerged as the quintessential all-American comeback story. Today, The Bronx economy is booming. Over the next five years, it is estimated that over $3.5 billion will be invested in both large and small development projects. There is now unique opportunity to merge economic growth with environmentally friendly building practices. The Bronx is committed to making green development good for the environment, and good for the wallet,” Carrion stated.
Dr. Patrick Moore has been a leader in the international environmental field for over 30 years. He is a co-founder of Greenpeace and served for nine years as President of Greenpeace Canada and seven years as a Director of Greenpeace International. As the leader of many campaigns Dr. Moore was a driving force shaping policy and direction while Greenpeace became the world's largest environmental activist organization. In recent years, Dr. Moore has been focused on the promotion of sustainability and consensus building among competing concerns. He was a member of British Columbia government-appointed Round Table on the Environment and Economy from 1990 - 1994. In 1990, Dr. Moore founded and chaired the BC Carbon Project, a group that worked to develop a common understanding of climate change.
