CARRION NAMED PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LATINO ELECTED OFFICIALS
THE NATION'S LARGEST ASSOCIATION OF LATINO ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS
Bronx Borough President one of the leading Latino leaders in New York City has been named the President of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO). Carrion is the first person of Puerto Rican descent to lead this national organization made up of over 6,000 elected officials.
“This is an extremely exciting time to be taking the reigns of this very important organization. With Latinos becoming the second largest population group in the nation we are poised to shape the future of this great country”, stated President Carrion. “I look forward to working with my colleagues on some very crucial issues including immigration reform, reestablishing a national urban agenda and ensuring educational resources for our children to just name a few.
ABOUT PRESIDENT ADOLFO CARRION
Carrion a former urban planner, school teacher and community organizer first won elected office in 2001, becoming a New York City Council Member representing the 14th District in the Bronx. Carrion served one term before running for the Borough Presidency of the Bronx and winning in 2001. In five years, Carrion has helped create more private sector jobs in the Bronx than any other borough. 10,000 new private sector jobs have been created during his administration and 30,000 people have found jobs. Unemployment has been cut y more than 50%...from 11.3% to 5.4% and 13,000 fewer people are living in poverty. Last year, the Bronx ranked 3rd in the state and 1st in the city in Personal Income Growth.
“The story of the Bronx is an American classic. It is a story of a community coming together and refusing to back down when faced with great adversity. I am proud that today the Bronx is Back and I hope that this will inspire others across the nation to take action and never lose faith in the power of a united community,” stated Carrion.
