BRONX, NY- Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion celebrated Bronx Week 2007 by transforming the Veterans’ Memorial Hall of the Bronx County Supreme Courthouse into a fully operational salon.   Carrion’s Domestic Violence Awareness initiative offered free manicures, facials, makeovers and massages to women while distributing valuable information on domestic violence, prevention programs and services for victims.

This Year’s theme “Domestic Violence in the Workplace” focused on the role employers can play in supporting employees who are victims of domestic violence.  Carrion cited companies who have modified their internal policies to address and assist employees who are victims of domestic violence.

“Employers often times do not know how to deal with employees who are victims because of lack of resources, training or many times they view these situations as personal matters.   I am pleased to recognize these employers who are helping their employees and I encourage all businesses and organizations to look at these models and replicate them,”  said Carrion.

Carrion presented a proclamation to the Communication Workers of America and Verizon, who were the first to modify their internal policies to protect employees who were experiencing domestic violence, for their “CWA District 1/IBEW/Verizon Work Family Initiative.” The Borough President also acknowledged the American Beauty School and Ms. Charito Cisneros for volunteering their services to DiVA Spa.

The Borough President unveiled award winning artwork created by teens from all over the Bronx.  Recently, The Center Against Domestic Violence (CADV) in coordination with Verizon Wireless’ Hopeline® Grant Program sponsored a poster contest commemorating National Victim’s Rights Week.  The contest was held in fifteen high schools and middle schools where CADV operates the Relationship Abuse Prevention Program.  Three schools in The Bronx: Theodore Roosevelt High School, South Bronx High School and Eugene T. Maleska Middle School (P.S. 174) produced seven winners. Carrion said, “Programs like these are extremely important in educating teens about this serious issue.  We need to teach everyone children, teens and adults that domestic violence doesn’t just happen in the home and you don’t have to be married or an adult to be a victim of this horrible crime. I am pleased to see that these young people have used their talents to help raise awareness about this insidious crime that unfortunately effects people of all ages.”

Rona Solomon, Deputy Director of CADV said, “On behalf of CADV, I want to thank Borough President Carrion for inviting us here today, and for acknowledging the work of these outstanding young artists.  We are extremely grateful to Verizon Wireless’ support of our poster contest which has increased our ability to reach all New York City public intermediate and high school students –even those who are not enrolled in RAPP.  Ending the cycle of violence starts with education and awareness - through this vital program, CADV seeks to stop domestic violence in the next generation and develop leaders who will work to end the cycle of abuse.”

Since taking office Carrion has been working to combat domestic violence, partnering with the Bronx District Attorney’s Office and Sanctuary for Families, to create initiatives such as DiVA.

The Borough President also acknowledged the generous contributions from the American Beauty School, Charito Cisneros, Avon and Bronx Week sponsors Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC), BIC, Con Edison, Verizon, Citibank, HIP Health Plan of New York, JP Morgan Chase, News 12 The Bronx, Bronx Net, Metro Plus, Bronx At Work, BIEE,  Bronx design and Salsa Caterers.
