Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión donned a hard hat and a hammer to help build the Habitat for Humanity’s Mott Haven condominium project at 703 East 156th Street. Carrión joined with over 50 volunteers to begin construction on this project which when completed will include six one bedroom and two three bedroom homes, each featuring a large living room and full kitchen. These homes will be made available for both middle and lower income families and individuals. This construction will include efficient building methods, which will help homeowners save up to 40% on their energy bills. Environmentally building products will also be used during construction.

Habitats-NYC East 156th Street project will raise the number of habitat homeowner families in the Bronx to 29.

Habitat for Humanity is a partnership between volunteers who give their time to help build affordable homes, working alongside the families who will one day own these same homes. They work closely with businesses, congregations, community groups and city government to create affordable homes. In addition to building homes, Habitat–NYC is a leading advocate for affordable housing. Their goal is to ensure that every New Yorker has a decent, affordable home.

“Housing is a major issue for almost every one in New York, and I am proud to say that the Bronx is leading the way in providing housing opportunities for people of all incomes in our borough.  Affordable housing is vital to the economic revitalization of the City which is why it has been a cornerstone issue of my administration.  Homeownership provides stability, rebuilds neighborhoods and will further strengthen the economy and quality of life for the entire city,” said Carrión.

“Borough President Carrión is a great champion of affordable housing, as well as a great supporter of Habitat-NYC. In addition to contributing $.5 million to help create Habitat homes in the Bronx, he is giving his time and labor as well, working side-by-side with future homeowners to build their homes,” stated Roland Lewis, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity – New York City.

Carrión recently hosted a three day conference comprised of a series of workshops to tackle the growing affordable housing crisis in the Bronx and New York City. The conference, part of the Borough President’s Bronx at Work Housing Series: Market Approaches to Affordable Housing, consisted of a policy discussion with experts from the private and public sector where new approaches to increasing affordable housing opportunities throughout the city were discussed and panels highlighted the maintaining and creating of new, independent living arrangements for seniors, the maintaining and creating of new, independent living arrangements for seniors, and experts addressed the growing problem with Mitchell-Lama, Low-Income Housing Tax Credit and Project-based Section-8 buyouts
