BRONX BOROUGH PRESIDENT CELEBRATES NEW WING OF BRONX MUSEUM OF THE ARTS
Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion celebrated the expansion of the Bronx Museum of the Arts. The new larger facility will enable the museum to build on such core programs as Artist in the Marketplace (AIM), which has provided professional development opportunities and a venue for exhibition to over 800 participants in its 26-year history, and provide more space for a permanent collection of 20th and 21st-century works by artists of African, Asian, and Latin American ancestry.
Additionally, the Museum collects works by artists for whom The Bronx has been critical to their artistic practice and development. The Museum’s educational offerings spring from these central programs with outreach to children and families as well as adult audiences.
“Home to nearly a million and a half residents, The Bronx is experiencing an economic resurgence, and a blossoming of the arts as well. I see The Bronx Museum of the Arts as the central force for the visuals arts in the borough, and the current expansion and this important international exhibition as examples of what can be achieved, and experienced, on the Grand Concourse of today,” stated Carrion.
The flagship cultural institution of The Bronx, founded in 1971, The Bronx Museum of the Arts focuses on 20th-century and contemporary art, while serving the culturally diverse populations of The Bronx and the greater New York metropolitan area. Rising above the boulevard like an architectural origami of metal and light, the new Bronx Museum of the Arts provides expanded space for exhibitions, educational programs and public gatherings.
The Borough President allocated $950,000 in 2003 and $814,000 in 2006 for a total of $1,764,000 for the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
