BOROUGH PRESIDENT ADOLFO CARRION MARCHES WITH LATINAS AGAIINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Bronx, NY – Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión joined over 300 women dressed in wedding gowns today for the New York Latinas against Domestic Violence Sixth Annual Brides’ March. In its sixth year, the march highlights the significance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and honors Gladys Ricart and all domestic violence victims across the city.
“Domestic violence is having a devastating effect on our community. I am very pleased to see that men are joining women in taking a stand against this insidious crime. This is not a ‘woman’ problem; it is a community problem,”said Carrión. “I ask everyone to join me in speaking out against violence towards women. We must support the victims and provide them with the services they need to deal with their horrifying situations. As a community we need to work to insure that all citizens live safe, secure and healthy lives.”
The Brides’ March began six years ago after Gladys Ricart was shot to death in her wedding gown by a former boyfriend on September 26, 1999. Since then, women dressed in wedding gowns, along with men dressed in black, and gather on the anniversary date to march and raise awareness on the effect domestic violence has on Latino and all nationalities in New York City. Despite the effort of community groups and government agencies, domestic violence incidents continue to impact the lives of many families in the City. Carrión, who will also be hosting the Bronx DiVA Talk- a two hour live program to be broadcast by the Bronx’s News 12 on October 25th that will feature a panel of experts to discuss the array of services available to victims and their families-, stressed the importance of community involvement in combating this problem.
