Event Will Help Connect Bronx Residents To Available Jobs
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the state will partner with 87 businesses for the first-ever New York Works Career Expo and offer job seekers access to more than 6,773 available jobs. The expo, held in collaboration with the State Department of Labor and Empire State Development, will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hostos Community College in the Bronx. The event is free to job seekers and participating businesses.
“The New York Works Career Expo is helping to connect New Yorkers looking for employment with thousands of available positions in a variety of industries,” Governor Cuomo said. “I encourage all job-seekers to visit this one-of-a-kind event and learn more about the new opportunities that are available to them.”
Since Governor Cuomo took office, the New York State economy has created more than 440,400 private sector jobs, and is one of only 17 states to have regained all of the private sector jobs lost during the recession. Over the past three years, more than 250,000 private sector jobs have been added in New York City.
Since 2011, Governor Cuomo has worked with the State Labor Department and Empire State Development to pair industries in need of talented workers with people who are looking for new opportunities. The approach is now proven. In addition, the state has expanded its business services offerings to cater to business’ needs with new tax credits and other hiring incentives.
As part of the event, there will be a panel discussion with Bronx and New York City business leaders along with local workforce development experts about the emerging economy in the Bronx and its local talent. The panel, which begins at 10:15 a.m., will also include Deputy Secretary Alphonso David, Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Kenneth Adams, Labor Department Commissioner Peter M. Rivera and local elected officials.
State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera said, “Across the state, unemployment rates are declining. While we’ve seen marked declines in every borough of New York City, the Bronx is still plagued with one of the highest unemployment rates in the state. We have strategically chosen the Bronx as the location for our Career Expo, where the state’s career services are needed more than ever. I urge anyone looking for a job in the New York City region to join us for this Expo, which we hope will become annual event.”
Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Kenneth Adams said, “Over the past three years, Governor Cuomo’s leadership has led to lower unemployment rates in every region and the highest number of private sector jobs ever recorded in New York State. We are always looking for new ways to help people find jobs and the New York Works Career Expo will connect New Yorkers looking for work directly to employers looking to hire. I encourage anyone seeking employment in the New York City area to stop by the Expo and see what opportunities are available.”
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said, “Governor Cuomo continues to show his deep commitment to the future of The Bronx and its 1.4 million residents through this program. Economic development and job creation has been a top priority of my administration since I first took office in 2009, and this program is a great extension of those efforts. Working with Governor Cuomo and the Department of Labor we are connecting Bronx residents with potential employers, and I am grateful that such opportunities are being offered to those who need them right here in The Bronx.”
Businesses will be accepting resumes and conducting pre-scheduled and on-the-spot interviews. In addition, Department of Labor staff will be available to help any job seeker with resume review and workshops.

All businesses participating in the career fair must list their job openings on Governor Cuomo’s Jobs Express website, located at http://www.jobs.ny.gov/. Job seekers can use this site to post their resumes and search through more than 36,000 available jobs in New York City. Employers can search through submitted resumes and find highly qualified candidates in their own backyard. They can also post unlimited job openings at no cost.
