RE: Robert J. Lefkowitz wins 2012 Nobel Prize

“I would like to congratulate Robert J. Lefkowitz for winning the 2012 Nobel Prize in chemistry. It is absolutely exciting that a former graduate of one of our borough’s top-notch schools, the Bronx High School of Science, has won such a prestigious award.

“Bronx Science now has more Nobel Prize-winning alumni than any other secondary school, which truly reflects the historic work of our teachers and students at this exemplary education institution.

“At the same time, Bronx students are severely underrepresented in our Specialized High Schools, due to inadequate test preparation and other factors. The City’s Department of Education has failed to provide equal access to test training for economically disadvantaged middle-school students to prepare for the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT), the sole criterion in determining acceptance into eight of the City’s nine Specialized High Schools. This issue was highlighted in a report released by my office in May, titled ‘An Action Plan for Fixing the Specialized High School Admissions Process.’ The report was also cited and attached to the complaint in the recent NAACP law suit on this issue.  The Department of Education must create firm pathways for our neediest children to be successful.

“With that in mind, I hope that Mr. Lefkowitz’s accomplishments will inspire all of our students to work hard.  Dedication leads to tremendous accomplishments, I want our students to know that they too could be future Nobel Prize winners,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
