RE: Pending Senate vote on the American Community Survey

“This week, the Senate will vote on a bill passed by the House of Representatives to eliminate the American Community Survey (ACS).  This attack on the Census Bureau is an attack on the tenets this country was founded on. ACS replaced the Census long-form in 1991 and is the country’s most important document for gathering information, allowing citizens and all levels of government to make informed decisions on things such as traffic relief, economic development, hospital locations, where to build sewers, where to locate senior centers, where to buy a house, etc.  All of these critical services and more depend on ACS.  The list goes on and on.

“The bill’s sponsors claim the ACS is unconstitutional and represents government intrusion.  I counter that the ACS represents the United States Constitution to the fullest degree.  President James Madison, the primary author of the Bill of Rights, saw the creation of a Census Bureau as an opportunity of obtaining the most useful information for those who should hereafter be called upon to legislate for their country.

“The bill’s sponsors look to deadlock Congress even further by ensuring uninformed decision making, misspending and government waste. I urge the Senate to shoot down this bill and preserve the American Community Survey,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
