RE: Congress decision against extending unemployment benefits

“Yesterday’s decision by Congress against extending the benefits for the unemployed is bad news for thousands of Bronxites and New Yorkers alike, who have been relying on these benefits to cover basic necessities while looking for a job. The political game in Washington, with Republicans opposing the extension while pushing for tax cuts for the rich, will translate on thousands of families unable to pay rent and even buy food.

“I urge Congress to think about their constituents first and to immediately approve the extension of unemployment benefits as a way to avoid the increase of the already high levels of poverty in our communities,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
