  • Borough President Diaz Commemorated National Latino AIDS Awareness Day

On Friday, October 15, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. presented a proclamation to The Bronx HIV CARE Network/Montefiore Medical Center as part of the commemoration of  the National Latino AIDS Awareness Day 2010 (NLAAD), an initiative by the Hispanic Federation, the Latino Commission on AIDS and over 250 national organizations promoting AIDS prevention.

The most recent statistics available covering Jan 1, 2009, through June 30, 2009, show that in that time frame, 377 people were newly infected in the Bronx, which accounts for 20.7% of the city’s newly infected population.

“The most disturbing statistic for me is that The Bronx still takes the lead in deaths related to HIV/AIDS.  From January 1 to June 30, 2009, we lost 253 people to HIV/AIDS.  Though other boroughs have a larger infected population, The Bronx still loses more lives. That means Bronxites are not getting tested, and we need to keep working to educate our residents about the importance of getting tested and seeking proper life-saving treatment in the case of a positive result,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

The National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is intended to promote HIV prevention efforts in the Latino community that are culturally and linguistically appropriate and effective and to support efforts to overcome the stigma and discrimination that often accompanies the disease. The day was commemorated with activities in the borough, reflecting the depth of commitment by elected officials, health care providers, community based organizations, religious leaders, artists and other Latino community leaders.
